Electric Scooter vs 70cc Petrol Bike: Real Monthly Running Cost in Pakistan

Everyone knows electric is cheaper to run. Almost nobody has done the sums for a Pakistani rider, in rupees, for a real commute. So we did — for a 70cc petrol bike and a Nexo Nine 1500W, over the same 30 km a day. The gap is bigger than most people expect, and it isn't only fuel.

EV vs Petrol Bike: Real Monthly Cost — Nexo EV

The rider we modelled

To keep this honest we picked a typical case rather than a flattering one: a commuter in a mid-size Punjab city riding 30 km a day, 26 days a month — roughly 780 km a month. The petrol bike is a well-maintained 70cc returning 40 km per litre, which is generous; many older bikes in traffic do 35 or less. Petrol is taken at PKR 270 per litre and electricity at PKR 45 per unit, the kind of rate a household sees once slabs and taxes are included. Change any of these numbers in the savings calculator and the conclusion doesn't move.

Fuel vs electricity: the headline number

A 70cc bike covering 780 km at 40 km/l burns 19.5 litres a month. At PKR 270 that is PKR 5,265. The Nexo Nine's 76.8V / 32Ah Phylion pack holds about 2.46 units and covers 130–140 km, so 780 km needs roughly 14 units of electricity. At PKR 45 that is PKR 630. On energy alone the electric scooter costs about one-eighth as much to move.

Distance / month 780 km 780 km
Energy used 19.5 litres ≈14 units (kWh)
Unit price PKR 270 / litre PKR 45 / unit
Monthly energy cost PKR 5,265 PKR 630
Cost per km PKR 6.75 PKR 0.81

The costs petrol riders forget

Fuel is the visible bill. The invisible ones add up. A 70cc bike needs an oil change every 1,000–1,500 km — for our rider that's every six to eight weeks at PKR 800–1,200 including labour. Add tuning, a spark plug, air filter, chain and sprocket wear, clutch plates and the occasional carburettor clean, and a conservative maintenance figure for a bike doing 780 km a month is PKR 1,200–1,800 a month averaged across the year.

A Nexo has no engine oil, no spark plug, no clutch, no chain and no carburettor. The brushless hub motor has one moving part. Routine care is tyre pressure, brake pads and keeping the battery charged. Realistically budget PKR 200–300 a month for pads and tyres over time.

The full monthly picture

Monthly cost 70cc petrol bike Nexo Nine 1500W
Energy PKR 5,265 PKR 630
Maintenance (averaged) PKR 1,500 PKR 250
Total PKR 6,765 PKR 880
Saving per month PKR 5,885
Saving over 36 months PKR 211,860

Over the three-year battery warranty period the saving is around PKR 212,000 — most of the scooter's PKR 255,000 purchase price. Riders who charge from home solar during the day push electricity close to zero and get there faster. Our customer Eshal Amna reported her monthly fuel bill dropping from about PKR 18,000 to PKR 2,500 in electricity; her commute is longer than our model, which is why her saving is larger.

Note: Rule of thumb: every 100 km on petrol costs about PKR 675. The same 100 km on a Nexo costs about PKR 80.

What about the purchase price?

A new 70cc bike costs less up front than a Nexo Nine. But the difference is recovered by the running-cost gap in well under two years for a daily rider — and from then on the electric scooter is simply cheaper every month it exists. If you are buying on a budget, that is the comparison that matters: total cost over the years you will own it, not the sticker on day one.

When petrol still wins

Honesty cuts both ways. If you ride under 10 km a day, the saving shrinks and the payback stretches. If you regularly ride 200 km in a day with no chance to charge, a petrol bike's five-minute refuel is hard to beat — though the SU7's swappable battery narrows that gap. And if your area has extended power outages with no solar or generator, plan your charging around the schedule. For the overwhelming majority of daily commuters and delivery riders, none of these apply.
